How Yellow Grid Works

Smart Water Heating Control

Yellow Grid is a smart solution for automatically optimising hot water heating in electric boilers. It combines a control unit installed at the boiler with the Yellow Grid cloud platform, which analyses available data every day and creates an optimal water heating schedule.

The solution is designed for households using spot or dynamic electricity pricing, as well as for owners of solar PV systems. Depending on the installation type, Yellow Grid automatically selects the appropriate optimisation method.

The result is an automatically generated water heating schedule designed to minimise electricity costs while maximising the use of self-generated electricity and maintaining a sufficient supply of hot water.

After the initial setup, no regular user intervention is required. The solution operates automatically and creates a new water heating schedule every day.

The Yellow Grid cloud platform is included as part of the solution and is provided free of charge.

1. A New Heating Schedule Every Day

Every day, the Yellow Grid cloud platform creates an individual water heating schedule for each connected boiler.

Households Using Spot or Dynamic Electricity Pricing

The solution automatically evaluates:

  • current electricity prices,

  • distribution charges,

  • historical household consumption,

  • the current water temperature in the boiler.

Based on this information, Yellow Grid creates a heating schedule that uses the most cost-effective periods during the following day.

Households with a Solar PV System

If the installation includes a solar PV system, Yellow Grid uses a different optimisation algorithm.

Instead of analysing electricity prices, the system evaluates the forecasted solar PV generation based on weather forecasts and expected solar irradiance. Water heating is then scheduled primarily during periods when the highest solar energy production is expected.

In both cases, the day is divided into 96 fifteen-minute intervals, and the solution automatically selects the intervals that are most suitable for the specific household.

Before the start of each new day, the schedule is automatically sent to the control unit.

2. The Solution Continuously Learns

Regardless of the selected optimisation method, Yellow Grid continuously learns the characteristics of each boiler and the household's hot water consumption patterns.

It analyses, for example:

  • how quickly the water heats up,

  • the household's hot water consumption profile,

  • how quickly the boiler cools down,

  • the hot water reserve required to maintain user comfort.

This enables Yellow Grid to continuously refine the heating schedule and automatically adapt to changes in household behaviour and seasonal conditions.

What You Don't Have to Worry About

Once the device has been registered, the entire solution operates automatically.

You do not need to:

  • monitor electricity prices,

  • switch the boiler on manually,

  • adjust the settings every day,

  • analyse charts or weather forecasts.

Yellow Grid does all of this for you and automatically creates a new water heating schedule every day.

3. Installation

The Yellow Grid control unit is connected to an existing electric boiler in one of two ways.

Boilers with a Plug

If the boiler is connected using a standard mains plug, the Yellow Grid unit is simply installed between the electrical outlet and the boiler. Installation is quick and does not require any modifications to the electrical installation.

Boilers with a Fixed Electrical Connection

If the boiler is permanently wired, the Yellow Grid unit is installed in the power supply cable between the electrical distribution board and the boiler. This installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with applicable regulations.

The installation also includes a temperature sensor, which is attached to the hot water pipe leaving the boiler. This allows the solution to monitor the current water temperature and optimise the heating schedule more accurately.

4. Connecting to the Yellow Grid Cloud

After installation, the control unit connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, Ethernet or LTE, depending on the selected device version.

The device is then registered with the Yellow Grid solution using a simple setup wizard.

During the initial setup, the user enters information about the supply point, distribution tariff, electric boiler and, if applicable, the solar PV system. This information enables Yellow Grid to create an individual water heating schedule tailored to the specific household.

Once the registration is complete, no further configuration is required.

5. The First Days of Operation

During the first two weeks, the solution learns the characteristics of your boiler and your household's hot water consumption patterns.

It analyses, for example:

  • how quickly the water heats up,

  • the household's hot water consumption profile,

  • how quickly the boiler cools down,

  • the hot water reserve required to maintain user comfort.

Every household uses hot water differently. That is why Yellow Grid builds an individual operating model for each boiler, allowing it to optimise water heating as accurately as possible.

6. Who Is the Solution Designed For?

Yellow Grid is ideal for households that:

  • use spot electricity pricing,

  • have a dynamic electricity tariff,

  • own a solar PV system and want to make better use of their self-generated electricity,

  • are looking for simple automation without a complex Energy Management System (EMS).
