Yellow Grid focuses on smart control of electric boilers
Electric boilers are a common part of most homes. They are also one of the largest electricity consumers and, thanks to their ability to store thermal energy, they are ideally suited for smart energy management.
Yellow Grid is easily connected to your existing electric boiler, transforming it into a smart device that automatically decides when it is most economical to heat water. This reduces electricity costs without compromising user comfort.
An electric boiler can account for up to 40–60% of a household's electricity consumption if the home is not electrically heated. At the same time, it is one of the few household appliances whose operation can be flexibly controlled without affecting user comfort.
A conventional electric boiler is controlled only by its built-in thermostat and maintains the selected water temperature regardless of electricity prices or the availability of electricity generated by a solar PV system.
Households with dual-rate electricity tariffs use ripple control to switch between high and low distribution tariffs. However, this approach was designed at a time when electricity prices remained almost constant throughout the day. Today's energy market is far more dynamic, with electricity prices changing every 15 minutes and renewable energy playing an increasingly important role.
Yellow Grid uses the principle of demand flexibility. It shifts water heating to periods when electricity is cheapest or when electricity generated by your own solar PV system is available. During peak price periods, electricity consumption is reduced without compromising the availability of hot water.
The Yellow Grid solution combines a control unit installed at the boiler with the Yellow Grid cloud platform, which automatically creates an individual water heating schedule every day. By continuously analysing electricity prices, distribution tariffs, solar PV generation forecasts and household consumption patterns, the system continuously optimises boiler operation.
In addition to reducing electricity costs for users, Yellow Grid also contributes to more efficient use of electricity and helps improve the stability of the power grid. Our goal is to make smart boiler control available to households not only in the Czech Republic but gradually across other European countries as well.
