YG Free for Shelly
YG Free is a cloud-based solution for automatically controlling electric boilers through compatible third-party devices, primarily Shelly.
It uses the same control cloud and optimisation algorithms as YG Heat devices. Every day, Yellow Grid creates an optimal water heating schedule based on spot electricity prices and automatically controls the boiler through the connected device.
If you already have a compatible Shelly device, there is no need to install a separate Yellow Grid control unit. Simply connect the device to the Yellow Grid cloud and configure the optimisation settings.

YG Free - How it Works
YG Free is a cloud-based solution for automatically controlling compatible Shelly devices based on spot electricity prices.
Every day, Yellow Grid retrieves electricity prices for the relevant European market and selects the cheapest 15-minute intervals for operating the connected device.
The user sets the required number of 15-minute intervals (heating slots) per day. For example, with 8 intervals selected, the device will operate for a total of 2 hours per day. The individual intervals do not have to be consecutive.
Once a day, Yellow Grid sets the schedule directly in the connected Shelly device, which then switches the electric boiler or another appliance on and off at the scheduled times.
YG Free is not limited to electric boilers. It can also be used, for example, for pool heating or controlling other electrical appliances whose operation can be shifted to the cheapest periods of the day.
YG Free - Applications and Limitations
YG Free is designed primarily for DIY users with spot electricity pricing who want a simple way to control an electric boiler or another appliance based on electricity prices without using a YG Heat control unit.
Compared with YG Heat, YG Free offers a simpler set of functions:
-
control based on spot electricity prices only,
-
does not support dynamic tariffs,
-
does not support optimisation based on local solar PV generation forecasts,
-
does not support CWP – Cold Water Protection, as no temperature sensor is used; hot water may therefore run out during the day,
-
supports compatible Shelly devices with power monitoring only,
-
the service is free of charge, but must be renewed once a year via the web interface.
Installation of the Shelly device into the electrical installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
For controlling electric boilers with a power rating above 1 kW, we expressly do not recommend the Shelly Plug PM Gen3 or Shelly Plug M Gen3 plug-in models.
